The Butterfly. London: Fleetway House [Amalgamated Press]. No. 490. 31 January 1914.

Running downwards on page 4, “The Butterfly Picture Palace” (right), a “cinema” drawn since 1913 by Tom Radford. Here we have an “extra funny film” about a tramp seeking and finding refuge in snowy weather. Around the four panels, the picture palace curtains are clearly visible, as are the heads of a row of the cinema-goers. In the early 1920s Radford follows this up with the series “Our Merry Movies”. In 1922, the editor of The Butterfly addresses his readers thus: “Why go to the cinema? No waiting, no standing, no pushing. Continuous shows at all hours! See below.” – “below” being a list of the items in his comic (The Butterfly, 14 October 1922).
